Bagatelle

Bagatelle is the University's in house Comic Book created by students. We on the Illustration course were asked to create a front cover. This is mine. We weren't given any constraints on it and I've found it quite enjoyable to just do what I like. Although this could also mean that mine won't be picked for the cover because it's miles away from what was wanted but I enjoyed myself so I'm fine with that.

Stuck in my head

For the past week or so I have had two songs stuck in my head:

Because of that advert that was on during the Christmas holidays for some Holiday company and

because Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington are awesome! Once one has gone the other jumps in good job I like the songs.

Playing with Type

Handdrawn type. Just a bit of playing I've been doing whilst getting slightly distracted from my uni work. It started with work though.

House Doodles

Logo Designs

Our latest project for uni was to design logos for Four companies. We were given a list of Companies and I chose: Sealey - a manufacturer of tools, The Riverside Trust - Who work towards creating more natural habitats for British River wildlife, The Open House Project - a shelter for children and Fellside Farmshop - a farmshop.

These are my designs:

This is the one for Sealey, a loosely based the character on Tim 'the Toolman' Taylor from Home Improvement.

I used Herman the Heron (from my previous post) for this design.

The Open House Project, I cut this one from some dry brush painted paper.

And finally Fellside Farmshop.
This has unfortunately not been my best project but I'm fairly happy with the outcomes.

Herman the Heron

Herons are my very favourite birds. If I am very lucky, sometimes on my way home from uni at about 8 o'clock at night me and my house mates espy a heron fishing in the river Eden. I secretly have named him Herman I'm not sure what the others call him but I always smile when I see him.

Here are some sketches I've done of Herons.

Sweater? I prefer Jumper

I prefer Jumper but that makes even less sense than Sweater...

Degrees of Separation

'The Six Degrees of Separation'is the theory explaining that everyone in the world is connected via 'friend of a friend' links. For our latest project, our first one week project of this year, our brief has been to create two illustrations, one spot and one spread, describing this theory.

However it's not just as simple as drawing the connections between 'such and such' and 'so and so', we had to include ten objects and create links between them, they were: Mount Fuji, an analogue telephone, a porcupine, a picket fence, a wendy house, an umbrella, a rain cloud, a cactus, Admiral Lord Nelson and a teapot.

These are my finished pieces:

The first is the Spread illustration, unlimited by colour, and the second is the Spot illustration, which was limited to only two colours for printing.

Book Covers

Our previous project was to design three book covers for imaginary books from the 'A Very Short Introduction' Series. I did Marine Biology, Allotment Gardening and Ballroom Dancing. I have been posting various things from Marine Biology and Allotment Gardening previously but I am now finally posting the so far finished pieces.

I don't think they're my best work and I reckon I could do more to make them better but I'm happy for now.

Handmade Cards

I love homemade cards. They always feel more personal and I do quite enjoy making them too. This is one I recently made for my mushroom-a-holic Dad, it was his birthday.

The outside

and the inside. The mushroom is a lino print and the rest is cut paper and ink.

And second a Thank You card my parents received from my cousin Zoe. I really like it and so have decided to share it.

Tadpole

Just found this on Drawn.
The textures are beautiful and the colour is brilliant. I officially love it.
